Kanji Meanings

The gochisousama sound gives us a comfortable feeling. Because it has huge appreciation and love. “Gochisousama” is a set greeting for after-meal. Japanese people have started to use this magical word “Gochisousama” since the 2nd half of the EDO era. It’s about 200years ago.

Gochisousama pronunciation is slightly difficult to say. But this greeting word is important and useful in Japan.

Oneday, in my childhood, when I forgot to say this important word, I was reprimanded a lot by everyone. That’s how much we respect this word in Japanese life.

Actually, gochisousama means two thankfulness, one is for cooking the food, and one is for getting ingredients such as vegetables, fish and meat.

Let’s look at the Kanji character of “Gochisousama”. Gochisousama Kanji is impressive and beautiful. This includes 2 Kanji character “馳 Chi” and “走 Sou”.

Both Kanji words have the meaning “Run”. In the old days, there were only poor transportation infrastructure, and we didn’t have so much choice of food logistics. 

Since there’s no guarantee of safety at that time, we always appreciated that the family came back safely with their foodstuff and ingredients. All the family members should be thankful for eating time.

We should be thankful for their two tasks “Cook and Run”

People who work in the kitchen have two essential jobs for their customers. Besides cooking and preparing dishes, they also have to go get groceries and ingredients.

By saying “Gochisousama”, we should be thankful for their two tasks. It is important to say proper greetings at each moment.

In a positive way, an excellent worker greets you very cheerfully. That’s one of the most important skills and I have to learn more about it. In the kitchen, we always need to prevent miss orders and misunderstanding with customers. All people who work in the food industry need to avoid misleading customers about its quality. Though, we’re not sure about large voices, because of this pandemic situation, it’s one of the best solutions to use your voice clearly. 

It is important for building a good relationship with wholesalers. That’s the chef’s responsibility and authority.
